Personnages principaux

The Narrator

A linguist sent to document a dying dialect, armed with recorder and notebook. His curiosity feeds the thing under the mountain until it takes his voice, his shadow's strength, and three days of his life — leaving him afraid to speak aloud.

Old Maren

The village elder who understands the bargain Arsh demands. She warns the narrator twice, names the crime — feeding it words instead of silence — and refuses him even a goodbye.

Tam

A boy of about ten, the only villager willing to speak into the narrator's recorder. He passes on the warnings his family carries, including his grandfather's fate: he came back from the mountain without his shadow.
