  1. 1

    Teil 1

    The Manticore at the Dance

A military school in Bar Harbor, Maine, is the last place you'd expect monsters, but Grover Underwood, disguised as a student, smells trouble. He calls in Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Thalia Grace, and the four slip into Westover Hall's winter dance hunting two new demigods: siblings Bianca and Nico di Angelo. At a dance, they are attacked by Dr. Thorn, a vice principal who is revealed to be a manticore, and a fight erupts. During the fight, Annabeth leaps onto Thorn's back, and they both vanish over a cliff. Artemis and her Hunters arrive and the goddess shoots the manticore, but he plunges into the sea with Annabeth, taking her captive. Artemis introduces her Hunters, immortal maidens who have sworn off men. Thalia is offered a place among them but hesitates. Then Artemis leaves to hunt a dangerous monster alone, putting her lieutenant Zoë Nightshade in charge. At Camp Half-Blood, the Hunters compete against campers in a capture-the-flag game, Bianca joins the Hunters and stuns Nico, and Percy and Thalia clash over command until a mechanical Colchis bull built by Hephaestus attacks. The Oracle gives Zoë a prophecy: "Five shall go west to the goddess in chains, one shall be lost in the land without rain, the bane of Olympus shows the trail, campers and Hunters combined prevail, the Titan's curse must one withstand, and one shall perish by a parent's hand." Zoë picks Grover, Thalia, Bianca, and herself. Percy insists on joining as the fifth.

  2. 2

    Teil 2

    West, Through Lions and Junkyards

The questers, Percy, Thalia, Grover, Bianca, and Zoë, head west. In Washington, D.C., the Nemean Lion blocks them, its hide impervious to every weapon. Percy tricks it into opening its mouth and fires Riptide down its throat, then wears the pelt as armor. Percy uses a drachma to make an Iris-message to the sea, contacting his father Poseidon. Poseidon warns him that the General is Atlas, the Titan who holds up the sky, and that Percy must be careful. He also tells Percy that Annabeth is still alive. Percy then sees a vision of Annabeth holding up the sky in a dark cavern. The group is attacked by the General's servants, including Luke, who is revealed to be working for Kronos. Luke explains that he is raising the Titan lord and that Annabeth is being used as bait. Percy realizes Luke is the "bane of Olympus" from the prophecy. In Cloudcroft, New Mexico, the group encounters the Erymanthian Boar. Grover uses his nature magic to calm it, and they ride it to the junkyard of the gods, a massive scrap yard guarded by the giant metal automaton Talos. Bianca picks up a small metal figurine from the god Hephaestus's scrap heap, triggering the automaton. Bianca sneaks inside the automaton to disable it, but it malfunctions and falls on a power line, electrocuting her. She dies, fulfilling the prophecy's line "one shall be lost in the land without rain." Percy is devastated and blames himself.

  3. 3

    Teil 3

The Dam, the Garden, the Sky

Four questers now. At the Hoover Dam, they are attacked by skeletal warriors. Percy meets a mortal girl named Rachel Elizabeth Dare, who can see through the Mist. She helps him escape by throwing a hairbrush at one of the skeletons, and Percy jumps from the dam into the water below. Percy is rescued by a cow serpent named Bessie, whom he nicknames the Ophiotaurus. The creature is a malevolent force that, if sacrificed, could give someone the power to destroy Olympus. Percy promises to protect it and sends it to his father's underwater palace. The group reunites and travels to San Francisco. They meet Annabeth's father, Dr. Frederick Chase, a mortal history professor who studies ancient wars. He gives them a car and reluctantly helps them, though his relationship with Annabeth is strained. The group enters the Garden of the Hesperides, where Zoë reveals she is a former Hesperid, a daughter of Atlas. She was banished for helping Hercules steal a golden apple. They encounter Ladon, the hundred-headed dragon, and Zoë distracts it while the others sneak past. At Mount Tamalpais, the group finds Atlas's fortress. Annabeth is chained to a rock, holding up the sky. Artemis is also there, having taken the sky's weight from Annabeth. Luke and Atlas confront the group, and Atlas reveals his plan to overthrow Olympus. Percy fights Atlas, but the Titan is too strong. Artemis tricks Atlas by reminding him of his burden, and Percy takes the sky from Artemis so she can fight. Percy feels the crushing weight of the sky on his shoulders, nearly breaking him.

  4. 4

    Teil 4

    Constellations and Consequences

Artemis battles Atlas while Percy holds the sky. Zoë is mortally wounded by her father, Atlas. Luke falls from a cliff during the fight, seemingly to his death. Artemis finally outmaneuvers Atlas and forces him back under the sky, trapping him again. Zoë dies in the aftermath, and Artemis transforms her into a constellation, the Huntress. Before dying, Zoë tells Percy, "I am honored you carry my burden. You are a true hero." At the winter solstice council of the gods on Mount Olympus, Percy presents Bessie the Ophiotaurus to the gods, who decide to spare it. Thalia joins the Hunters of Artemis, preventing her from turning sixteen and potentially fulfilling the Great Prophecy. Percy asks the gods to keep a closer eye on their children. The gods vote on whether to destroy Percy and his friends for knowing too much. Poseidon, Athena, and Artemis argue in Percy's favor. Zeus ultimately decides to let them live, but warns Percy that if he ever flies in the sky again, he will be struck down. Back at Camp Half-Blood, Percy tells Nico that Bianca is dead. Nico, enraged, accuses Percy of failing to protect her. He reveals he is a son of Hades and opens a chasm in the earth, summoning skeletal warriors. Nico flees, vowing revenge. Percy returns home to his mother Sally's apartment for Christmas. He gives her a gift from Medusa's head—a stone statue of his abusive stepfather Gabe, which Sally uses as a garden ornament. Sally tells Percy she is proud of him. Annabeth and Percy share a moment at camp before Percy leaves. Annabeth thanks him for saving her and admits she was scared. Percy tells her she is the bravest person he knows. They hold hands briefly, hinting at their deepening bond. The book ends with Percy reflecting on the prophecy and the looming threat of Kronos. He knows that Luke is still alive and that the Titan lord's army is growing. Percy resolves to keep fighting, knowing the real war is yet to come.

  • Bessie the OphiotaurusCow serpent whose sacrifice could destroy Olympus. Percy promises to protect it and sends it to Poseidon's palace; the gods spare it.

Worum es wirklich geht

Themen

The weight you choose

The sky is literal here: Annabeth holds it, then Artemis, then Percy, whose shoulders nearly break under it. Percy volunteers for a burden that isn't his, and Zoë's dying words honor exactly that choice. Meanwhile Atlas, who holds the sky by curse, schemes to hand it off permanently. The book keeps asking who carries what, and for whom: Bianca dies trying to fix the danger she triggered, Thalia accepts eternal service to dodge a prophecy, Percy takes the crushing weight so a goddess can fight. The point: heroism is measured by what you agree to hold up, not by what you're forced to.

Girls who choose their own side

The Hunters of Artemis are immortal maidens who have sworn off men, and the book treats their choice with respect rather than mockery. Bianca joins to escape a lifetime of guarding Nico; Thalia hesitates, then joins at the solstice, trading a normal adolescence for immortality and dodging the Great Prophecy. Zoë leads the quest and dies at her father's hand, then is honored in the stars. Even Artemis leaves her own lieutenant in charge while she hunts alone. The book's point: these girls and women define themselves by their oaths, not by the boys around them, and the story is richer for it.

Prophecy as trap

The Oracle's lines come true one by one, but never the way anyone expects. "One shall be lost in the land without rain" points to Bianca's electrocution in the desert junkyard; "the bane of Olympus" turns out to be Luke; "one shall perish by a parent's hand" is Zoë, killed by Atlas, her father. Percy forces his way onto the quest as the unchosen fifth, and the prophecy bends around him anyway. The book's point: fate in these stories isn't a script to escape but a language to misread, and every attempt to dodge it, like Thalia joining the Hunters, just moves the danger somewhere else.

Fathers who fail

Fathers damage nearly everyone here. Atlas mortally wounds his own daughter Zoë. Annabeth's father, Dr. Frederick Chase, helps the quest but their relationship stays strained. Zeus's warning hangs over Percy at the end, and Poseidon's help comes only as a warning through the sea. Nico's rage at Percy is really grief for a sister who left him, in a family line, Hades's line, that the camp never welcomed. The book's point: godly and mortal fathers alike hand their children burdens instead of protection, and the kids have to decide what to do with the inheritance.

The cost of knowing too much

Percy learns that the General is Atlas, that Luke raises Kronos, that the Ophiotaurus could destroy Olympus, and that Nico is a son of Hades. Each piece of knowledge costs him: the gods vote on whether to destroy him and his friends for knowing too much, and only Poseidon, Athena, and Artemis speak for them. Zeus spares Percy but forbids him the sky. Percy ends the book carrying secrets that make him a target, from Kronos's army and from Olympus alike. The point: in a war between Titans and gods, information is both your best weapon and the reason everyone wants you dead.

Symbole

The sky
The burden passed from Annabeth to Artemis to Percy, and the curse Atlas schemes to escape. Whoever holds it is immobilized and slowly crushed, so the fight turns on who is willing to stand under it. Percy's willingness to take it, and Zeus's ban on him ever flying again, mirror the whole story: the weight is real, and choosing it is the heroism.
The constellation, the Huntress
Zoë's transformation after Atlas kills her. It turns a banished Hesperid, disgraced for helping Hercules, into a permanent light in the night sky. Her fate mirrors the quest: service, exile, sacrifice, and finally recognition, on Artemis's terms rather than the gods'.
The junkyard of the gods
A desert scrap yard of divine leftovers guarded by Talos, where Bianca takes one small figurine and pays with her life. It stands for the gods' carelessness with their children: cast-off treasures, deadly defenses, and a prophecy line, "one shall be lost in the land without rain," fulfilled by a girl no god protected.
Gabe's statue
The stone figure of Percy's abusive stepfather, created from Medusa's head, that Sally keeps as a garden ornament. It is the abuser frozen, harmless, and on display, a small domestic victory that mirrors the larger one: monsters and monsters' collaborators can be turned into decoration.
