Corruption by consent
Nobody in Village is conquered. They're offered things — beauty, a Gaming Machine, whatever they want — and they hand over their best qualities voluntarily. Mentor gives up his birthmark; neighbors stop sharing; Ramon stops seeing Matty. The book's evil doesn't kick the door in; it sets up a market and waits. That's what makes it scarier than any dictator: the townspeople do this to themselves, one small trade at a time, and by the time they notice what they've lost, they've already voted to lock everyone else out.
