What the characters stand for

Themes & symbols

Symbol: The pressure chamber

Merete's supposed death by drowning, stretched out over five years. Her captors simulate drowning to punish her for a death she did not die, and the chamber's survival mirrors hers: the thing built to kill her becomes the proof she lived.

Symbol: The basement office

Department Q is where the force buries cases and broken men. Carl walks in a discarded detective and walks out the one person who found Merete, so the basement becomes the opposite of what it was meant to be.

Symbol: The payphone call

A single anonymous call on the day Merete vanished is the thread that unravels the whole cover story. It stands for the small, overlooked detail that separates a suicide from a kidnapping.

Symbol: Uffe's scream

'She is locked in!' sounds like madness and is actually testimony. The book's central symbol of truth locked inside a damaged mind, waiting five years for someone to listen.
