The goal is money, not busyness
Jonah's airport question breaks Alex in the best way: what is the goal of your manufacturing organization? Alex offers efficiency, quality, market share — and every answer is rejected. The only goal is to make money; everything else is a means. The division meeting makes the cost of forgetting this visible: a plant at the bottom of every metric. The book's point is that activity is not achievement, and a company that cannot say what it is for will optimize itself into the ground.
