Family you build

The Flock functions as a family: Max leads, Iggy and the Gasman guard the house, and Max, Fang, and Nudge fly to save Angel. Nudge and Fang follow a lead to Nudge's possible biological mother, which turns out to be a trap; Angel gathers information about their biological parents; the Flock heads to Washington, D.C., to search for their biological parents. Angel adopts a genetically altered small dog named Total.

The lab that owns you

The School never lets go. It created them, raised them in cages, and implanted a microchip in Max's arm. Erasers attack the house and abduct Angel; the Flock is later captured and taken to the School. Jeb is discovered alive and working for the scientists who created them. At the Institute, the Flock finds a hidden lab containing other genetic experiments.

Children forced to be adults

Max is fourteen and leads the Flock. Iggy and the Gasman booby-trap the house with explosives. The Gasman escapes into the woods after the house is blown up. Angel, six, is abducted and later gathers information from the lab's computers. The Flock faces a burned home, Max's bullet wound, and Ari's death.

The enemy with a face

Ari, though physically appearing as an adult, is only seven years old; he resents the Flock because his father, Jeb, chose them over him. Max accidentally kills him, and Jeb reveals Ari was her brother.

A microchip is implanted in Max's arm by the School.

The Flock was raised in cages at the School; the Institute holds other genetic experiments. The Flock frees the imprisoned experiments, and Angel adopts Total.
