What the book is about
Thurman tells Reacher he is nothing and has nothing. Reacher flips it into a threat: a man with nothing to lose is the most dangerous man Thurman will ever meet.
Characters:Jack ReacherThurman
Thurman quotes scripture while interrogating Reacher and calls Despair a sovereign community under God's law, then builds a truck-sized bomb under the town's church.
Characters:Jack ReacherThurman
Despair functions because it is sealed: a company town run by a powerful metal recycling plant, Hope's police have no jurisdiction, and earlier missing-persons investigations were blocked.
Reacher is thrown out of Despair before he finishes his coffee, and every easy path runs the other way: back to Hope, back to the highway, back to nobody's problem.
Characters:Jack Reacher
Objects that carry meaning
Hope and Despair sit twelve miles apart on the same road, and the geography is the argument: the two towns are neighbors, separated by a line you can walk.
The bomb under the church is a truck-sized device packed with C-4 and shrapnel.
The missing soldier is found in a shallow grave, identified by his dog tags.
The road Reacher walks in on and out on, running past both towns and then west into Colorado.
Spoilers
Thurman is dead, the bomb is disarmed, federal agents descend on Despair, and Reacher's work is done. Vaughan offers him a place to stay, and he declines, saying he needs to keep moving. The last image holds both towns in view at once, Hope and Despair, before he turns and begins walking west into the Colorado landscape.
